Despite its rugged origins, Prickly Pear Seed Oil is a deeply soothing ingredient that transforms sensitive skin. Derived from the Opuntia cactus - a resilient desert plant long used in Mexico and the Caribbean - this oil has transitioned from a dietary staple to a skincare superstar.
While the fruit itself is abundant, the oil is exceptionally rare. This is due to the meticulous method required for extraction. Each seed must be handpicked from the pulp, and the yield is incredibly low: only 5% of the oil can be extracted from the seeds. To produce just a single litre of oil, approximately one million seeds and 36 hours of manual labour are required. This labour-intensive process is why true, unrefined Prickly Pear Seed Oil is one of the most expensive plant oils on the market.
Fortunately, the crop itself is highly sustainable. The cactus is drought-resistant, requiring little water and no deforestation to grow. It promotes biodiversity by offering shelter and nutrients to wildlife, making it an ingredient that benefits both your skin and the planet.

Research highlights the star qualities of this ingredient. It contains high levels of linoleic acid (Omega 6), oleic acid (Omega 9), amino acids, zinc, polyphenols, and betalains. Most notably, it has one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin E found in any plant source - about 150% more than Argan oil. With such a beneficial lineup, it effectively neutralises free radicals and supports the skin's natural repair processes.

We recommend using it in the evening as the final step in your routine, applied after your water-based serums and moisturiser. This helps seal in nutrients and moisture overnight. Alternatively, if you have very dry skin, you can mix a drop directly into your moisturiser in the palm of your hand before applying.
