The Benefits of Camellia Seed Oil

The Benefits of Camellia Seed Oil

Posted by Kri Skincare on

Camellia seed oil has been used for culinary, ornamental, cosmetic, and medicinal purposes for over a century. Otherwise known as white tea seed oil thanks to the leaves producing the majority of caffeinated teas enjoyed around the world, it's a staple crop for both the food and beauty industry and is one of the four oil-bearing trees alongside coconut, olive, and palm.

In skincare, it's famed for being a beauty elixir of Japan's geishas, who use it instead of water to cleanse their face. Taking a cue from this ancient beauty secret, camellia seed oil is the hero ingredient in our popular cleansing oil. Discover the power of this natural ingredient.

What Is Camellia Seed Oil?

Produced from the seeds of the camellia flower which is native to Japan and China, this flowering shrub is packed full of essential vitamins and minerals, and it offers a big boost of antioxidants and fatty acids. Plus, it has a molecular weight similar to sebum which allows it to absorb easily. It's no wonder it has remained a popular choice since ancient times.

There are more than 100 species of camellia, but the primary types utilised for skincare products are japonica, oleifera, and sinensis. Of these three, oleifera is a popular choice due to its more emollient properties. While it has a heavier molecular weight than the other varieties, the pale yellow oil is non-comedogenic meaning it will not clog pores, and it is gentle, lightweight, and versatile.

Camellia oleifera contains vitamins like A, B, and E, minerals (including phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium), omega 3, 6, and 9, and can have over 85% oleic acid which makes it a powerful replenishing ingredient. It also offers a lot of beneficial qualities that improve the texture and overall health of both hair and skin.

Benefits of Camellia Seed Oil

Fights free radicals

Free radicals can lead to sagging skin, wrinkles, and dark spots. Research shows that camellia seed oil is antioxidant-rich and full of promise when it comes to fighting free radicals. Antioxidants are known for their ability to reduce cell and DNA damage caused by normal biological functions and exposure to environmental stressors like UV rays, cigarette smoke, industrial chemicals, and air pollution. Camellia seed oil may offer protection from these environmental factors and reduce the effects of premature ageing.

Moisturises and conditions

Camellia seed oil is known for its intensive conditioning properties, and studies show that high levels of fatty acids contribute to supple, smooth, soft complexions. This natural oil works to replenish skin lipids which helps prevent dehydration and irritation and offers a nourishing touch that relieves dryness and promotes a healthy glow.

Helps reduce hyperpigmentation

One of the leading causes of hyperpigmentation is an excess production of melanin. Research highlights the relationship between ingredients like white tea seed oil and discolouration, showing a significant decrease in melanin content when camellia oleifera is introduced. Oleic acid and polyphenols work to inhibit pigmentation, and the plant serves as a natural source of squalene which helps protect and treat symptoms.

Revitalises and restores

Camellia seed oil contains vitamins that stimulate collagen production and help tackle fine lines and wrinkles. Studies show that the plant offers restorative properties that can reduce the appearance of premature ageing and promote healthy skin. Research also reveals that camellia holds anti-inflammatory and mildly astringent qualities meaning it has the potential for fighting acne and soothing redness.
