Safflower Seed Oil: A Lightweight Skin Saviour

Safflower Seed Oil: A Lightweight Skin Saviour

Posted by Kri Skincare on

Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Oil, otherwise known as thistle or safflower oil, is an ingredient found in many skincare products. We use it for its incredibly lightweight texture, helping to balance any ‘greasy’ feeling that heavier oils can leave on your skin. It's also a great source of omega-6 fatty acids, which help maintain your skin's health.

What Is Safflower Seed Oil?

Part of the thistle family, the safflower plant is a drought-resistant annual that boasts a long history and long list of benefits. Thought to be one of humanity's first crops, the herb dates back thousands of years and remains a staple to this day as the oil and flowers are used in cooking, haircare, paints, beauty routines, food colouring, and more.

Safflower seed oil is prized for containing five different types of fatty acids, and it has been proven to be very versatile. Pale yellow with a minimal scent and non-greasy lightweight texture, it is suitable for all skin types.

Benefits of Safflower Seed Oil

High in linoleic acid, the oil extracted from safflower seeds provides emollience, helps to combat blemishes, soothes and improves skin texture.

Fights inflammation. Those with eczema or acne-prone skin can benefit from the gentle and non-comedogenic effects of safflower seed oil, as the omegas within assist in reducing irritation and redness. Studies reveal that the oil may inhibit the immune response responsible for inflammation, and this can result in clearer, calmer skin. The levels of linoleic acid can also reverse deficiencies that lead to breakouts and speed the healing process.

Restores dry skin. While very lightweight and not pore-clogging, this plant-based oil helps lubricate the skin and keep it soft, smooth, and replenished. Clinical trials demonstrate how fatty acids like those in safflower seed oil work to build healthy cells, promote a strong skin barrier, and assist in maintaining a plump and hydrated appearance.

Helps prevent premature ageing. Initial research into the restorative properties of safflower seed oil demonstrates it has the potential to slow UVB induced photo-ageing. From minimising wrinkles to inhibiting damage caused by the sun, the antioxidant qualities from Vitamin E and natural flavonoids found within the oil offer a big boost for mature skin.
